The city of Munich - The city of sports
In Bavaria's capital city, sports have always played a very important role. There are more than 650 sports clubs in Munich, around 75% of the city's inhabitants exercise regularly and a large number of international sports stars as well as Germany's most successful soccer club call Munich their home town. Being a city of sports, Munich focuses on promoting top-class sports and recreational and mass sports at the same time. The development of existing and new sports and recreation centers, the promotion of young athletes in schools and clubs, exercise and fitness and integration through sports play key roles in this endeavor.
The metropolis at the river Isar has always considered sports events among the essential highlights of cultural life in the city. Major sporting events like the European Championship in Athletics in 2002, the FIFA World Cup in 2006 and, last but not least, the Olympic Summer Games in 1972 were mastered with great success in Munich. In addition to top-class sporting events like the World Shooting Sport Championship 2010 and the IFSC Boulder World Cup 2010, Munich also focuses on recreational and hobby sporting events: during the 2010 Winter and Summer Sports Festivals, Munich's Blade Night or the recent Outdoor Festival several thousand participants came to do sports together.
The calender of sporting events in Munich reflects the diversity and the many different facets of sports in our city.
Running - in clubs or organized privately - has always been one of the most popular sports in Munich. The surveys conducted for sports development planning in 2010 clearly confirmed this trend. The City of Munich contributes in various ways to making running sports possible in the city: motivated runners are always welcome to join one of the many running and athletics groups in Munich's sports clubs. In addition to supporting sports clubs, the City of Munich also does its share to provide good sports infrastructure. The large number of parks in Munich, especially the Englischer Garten, is very popular with athletes and especially well-suited for running. Measured running tracks along the Isar river are currently being planned which will provide ideal conditions for long-distance training runs.
Running competitions have been a tradition in Munich for many years and are very popular: the European Championship in Athletics in 2002, the German Marathon Championship in 2006 and the annual city runs, corporate challenges and New Year's Eve runs are only some examples of a city that's always on the run...
The Sports City of Munich wishes all participants a great running festival and a fair competition during this year's Munich Marathon!
